THE TRANSPLANT TECHNIQUES

FUT- Follicular Unit Transplantation

FUT is a hair restoration technique where a patient's hair is transplanted in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units. Follicular units also contain sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional fine vellus hairs. In Follicular Unit Transplantation these small units allow the surgeon to safely transplant thousands of grafts in a single session, which maximizes the cosmetic impact of the procedure.

FUT is considered an advance over older hair transplantation procedures that used larger grafts and often produced an unnatural look. In a properly-performed follicular unit transplant, the results will mimic the way hair grows in naturally and will be undetectable as a hair transplant. Women in the past have not liked the idea of shaving their hair to have transplants but this is no longer required for hair transplant in women with the FUT technology.

FUE- Follicular Unit Extraction

FUE, also known as follicular transfer (FT), involves individual follicular units extraction directly from the patient's shaved donor area (usually 2mm), Following the administration of Local anesthetic, the grafts are individually harvested from the shaved donor area using a motorized punch. Once the desired numbers of grafts are obtained, the donor sites are left to heal without suturing. The rest of the surgical procedure continues as with FUT.

Nowadays FUE technology has grown into Advanced FUE. The main difference is that Advanced FUE enables the creation of larger donor pools by harvesting follicles from areas outside the head such as: chest, legs, arms, abdomen, back, face, and beard. Also Advanced FUE addresses the fact that hair often grows in curved trajectories. With standard FUE surgery there is the assumption that this growth occurs as a straight line which entails a risk of damaging the follicles during the excision and retrieval of the grafts. This risk is eliminated with advanced FUE.

FUE

Grafts

Follicles are more delicate as they may be stripped of protective sheath due to the nature of the procedure.

Transection/ Quality of Grafts

Higher transection rate no matter the harvesting method

Donor Area

Will have thousands of small holes that will be visible for at least 1 week

Scar

Many small circular scars

Recovery Time

No stitches in the donor area

Hair Length

Hair must be shaved to a length of 2mm at the donor area, and often the whole scalp

Resuming Activities

You should avoid any strenuous activity for 4-6 days

FUT

Grafts

Microscopically trimmed with a protective sheath around follicles

Transection/ Quality of Grafts

Very low transection rate due to microscopic dissection

Donor Area

will have stitches at the back of the head which can be covered by overlying hair

Scar

A light linear scar

Recovery Time

Stitches are removed from the donor area after 7-10 days

Hair Length

No need to shave hair before or after surgery as long as your hair is more than 2cm in the donor area

Resuming Activities

You should avoid any strenuous activity for 4-6 days
